About the Journal
The prime purpose of the Journal of the American Pomological Society is to provide a repository for information on all aspects of fruit and nut crops. Originally published as "Fruit Varieties Journal", the Journal of the American Pomological Society is the sole publication of the oldest fruit and nut society in the United States of America, founded in 1848.
Manuscripts reporting original research on a wide range of fruit and nut crops, cultivar releases, rootstocks releases, reviews, and short papers are welcomed. Acceptable areas of research include pruning, nutrition, irrigation, growth regulators, cultural practices, economics, and pest control. Studies involving the interaction of one or more of these aspects with either cultivars and/or rootstocks are particularly appropriate. Grapes (Vitis spp.) have evolved across diverse regions of the world. Vitis vinifera, the grape species most commonly used in wine production, is believed to have originated in the southern Caucasus before spreading throughout the Mediterranean region and subsequently to other parts of the world via historical trade routes. In North America, the native species V. labrusca is primarily utilized for juice production, whereas V. riparia is widely employed as a rootstock and in rootstock breeding programs. Hybridization among different grape species has resulted in cultivars with desirable horticultural traits and enhanced fruit quality. A notable example is Cotton Candy™ grapes, which are derived from a hybridization of V. vinifera and V. labrusca.
