In the past five years commercial strawberry acreage in the United States has declined from 79,860 acres in 1966 to 54,570 acres in 1970 **. However, the total tonnage has increased during that period from 469,145,000 pounds in 1966 to 494,-700,000 pounds in 1970, largely as a result of increased yields per acre in California. In 1966, California produced 38 percent of the total U.S. crop with an average yield of 11.4 tons per acre. In 1970, the yield in California averaged 17 tons per acre and 58 percent of the total U. S. tonnage was produced in that state.
