Commercial production of rabbiteye blueberries ( Vaccinium asheiReade) had its beginning in the early 1890's when Mr. M. A. Sapp selected plants from the wild in northwestern Florida. Plants were transplanted into rows and continued to bear satisfactorily annually for over 35 years. By 1920 about 2,000 acres had been planted.
