Brazil consumes over 500,000 tons of temperate fruits each year. The most used temperate fruit is the apple, of which about 240,000 tons are consumed annually, followed by the peach with 100,000 tons. The other species of major importance are pear (80,000 tons), fig (45,000 tons), plums (25,000 tons), and nuts (12,000 tons). The majority of these fruits are imported and in 1979 about US $200 million was expended for their purchase. Apples alone cost US $100 million.
