Apple rootstock breeding programs were initiated in England at John Innes and at East Mailing in 1922 and 1924. Other rootstock breeding programs developed later in Germany, Sweden, Canada, the USSR, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, the USA and most recently, Japan. From the English efforts, the Malling-Merton stocks and Mailing 25 were introduced in 1952, M. 26 in 1965, and M. 27 in 1956. In the late 1940's, Alnarp 2 was introduced in Sweden, Robusta 5 and "Antonovka" in Canada, and PK-14 and Budagovsky 9 in the USSR (5).
