Abstract

Red raspberry is a valuable crop throughout the world with the majority of production occurring in Russia, Poland, and the United States. In recent years, however, the longevity and health of red raspberry plantings have declined. Phytophthora rubiand Pratylenchus penetransare common problematic organisms in red raspberry production and contribute to reduced plant vigor, yield, and overall survival. While chemical soil fumigation is a typical treatment for such organisms, there is growing awareness and interest in other soil management strategies among raspberry growers. Potential pre-plant and post-plant methods for managing P. rubiand P. penetransinclude use of resistant cultivars, cover cropping and living mulches, brassicaceous seed meal and biofumigation, soil solarization, anaerobic soil disinfestation, antagonistic microorganisms, and removal of infected plant material. Many of these practices have been shown to be effective in the management of a diversity of soilborne pathogens and plant-parasitic nematodes. This review will discuss the current practices and new techniques that may have application in floricane red raspberry.
