Walter Toenjes, Superintendent of the Graham Experiment Station, Grand Rapids, Michigan has made the following comments about different red sports of Jonathan apple: Double Red (Waynesboro Nurseries) —solid red, including calyx end, even in shaded parts of tree; performs well. Dark Red (Maloney Bros.)—same as Double Red. Jonared (Stark Bros.)— probably the most widely planted in Michigan; solid red on exposed branches, but shows considerable green on sides of fruit, and in basin, with fruit located on lower inside branches; some think it dark. Blackjon (C. & O. Nursery)—fruit an attractive red, but too small. Not recommended for Michigan.
