Beacon vs Fenton Apple

In a letter published in the October, 1960 issue of the Hoosier Horticulture Newsletter, W. D. Weeks, of the University of Massachusetts has the following to say with regard to the Beacon vs Fenton apple controversy:
"In our work of inspecting fruit tree nurseries for trueness-to-name, we have observed the Fenton for several years, and have come to the conclusion that Fenton is identical with the Beacon variety which was introduced by the Minnesota Station. In over 30 years of this work, we have never found two distinct varieties to have identical vegetative characters. We have propagated Beacon and Fenton in our own nursery, and cannot find any differences in vegetative characters of one- and two-year nursery trees. As a result of our studies, we believe that Fenton is identical with Beacon, and that the Fenton should be discontinued. In order to avoid confusion, we strongly urge everyone to use the variety name Beacon."
