Trailing types of blackberries grow along the western slopes of the Sierra and Cascade Mountains and westward to the Pacific Ocean. Brown (1) has classified the native material as Rubussub. Eubatussect. ursinus. The species that occur in the central and northern coastal region of California are somewhat variable both in plant characteristics and chromosome numbers, but those found in Oregon and Washington are more uniform. Blackberries of European origin, the Himalaya and Evergreen, occur in the area, but these have naturalized since the advent of the early settlers.
