The American Pomological Society has the distinction of awarding annually the Wilder Medal in recognition of outstanding contributions to horticulture in the broad area of pormology. This is one of the oldest and most coveted medals in the field of horticulture, and was established in 1873 by the A.P.S. in honor of Marshall P. Wilder, the illustrious founder and first president of the organization. In evaluating nominees for this award, special consideration is given to work relating to the organization and introduction of meritorious new varieties of fruit. Significant contributions to the science and practice of pomology other than fruit breeding are also considered.
